I depended on reviews written by others for this online purchase. I knew I would buy a Honeywell (suggested by my ENT), but which model was important. Several reviews called this model ‘quiet’ or the other models ‘noisy’. I opted for this model and am pleased with everything: it arrived the second day, was easy as pie to set-up, instructions were written in “English” and the performance is excellent.

It’s been ON since I set it up over a month ago. Today I checked the outer (pre) filter and dusted it off outside and reinstalled it. Manual suggests No Washing! It’s a dream so far!!!
I owned the Honeywell 17000 for 10 years- since ‘99- and it finally broke a few months ago. It came reccomended by my allergist– cost effective and good for a small space. It was a reliable, hard working unit– I moved 5 times (+?) with it, abused it by not changing the outer filter as requently as it needed and have a cat! I decided to replace the unit with the 17005 as it’s programmable with remote. So far, so good…

Yes the 17000 and 17005 create a white noise, air pushing sound, which I like anyway (kills noises for sleeping), but it’s not deafening, and if it bothers you throw it in the corner of the room; it will cycle the air the same. I would disagree that it’s as loud as an a/c– those things roar!

There are a myriad of air purifiers on the market today, all using many different technologies, and combinations of those technologies.  The air purifier you choose should address the air quality issue specific to you and your family, and the bells and whistles (such as digital displays, and remotes–one more to keep up with) are simply a matter of personal preference.  However, the following 4 features are ones that you’ll want to avoid at all cost. 

High Maintenance Filter-There are some filters on the market that require you to wash, spray, recharge, and change every 1-3 months.  Unless you have an enormous amount of time on your hands and you want to spend that time maintaining the filter in your purifier, read the fine print about the replacement filter and what it requires before you make your final decision.  Opt for low to no maintenance filters that need replacing only once every 5 years, and that come with a prorated warranty to make sure you get the most for your money.   

Noise-Fine out how much and what kind of sound to expect to hear when your cleaner is in use.  If you are able to find what seems like a great price, but the noise factor is high, eventually you’ll find yourself having to choose between clean air and peace and quiet, and most likely peace and quiet will win; but what a choice to have to make, right?  Ask about the sound-is it more like a motor sound, or white noise sound.  Very few people would want the sound of a motor to sleep by, but some find the sound of rushing air, or white noise very soothing.  Be sure you know which your purifier produces and are happy about it before you make your final decision.

HEPA purifiers without the “true” label aren’t held to specific standards, which means they could, theoretically, not filter air in any way. That doesn’t mean every HEPA-type machine is total trash, but you’re totally dependent on the quality control of the manufacturer.

How Does Hunter Stand Out From The Crowd?

There are a few ways in which Hunter HEPA purifiers are a bit different. Low price, for one. As mentioned above, a Hunter HEPA air purifier is very likely to be cheaper than just about every similarly featured competitor. Also, the features are a bit different. No, Hunter does not generally offer bleeding edge technology, but if it’s proven, you can be it will be included. They do have a lot of different models so that you can pick and choose your features without paying for what you don’t want, too. The QuietFlo series alone has over a dozen different models with different features and capacities. Is it fair to say Hunter offers the best HEPA air purifier around? For the money, it’s quite likely.
